Hampstead Music Club

Membership Secretary: Maria Harjani, 020 7278 1991, MARIA-HARJANI@email.msn.com

The Hampstead Music Club has been going for over 50 years. Its members are mostly amateur players or singers, with a few professional players and 'just listeners' mixed in. We usually meet in different combinations on Tuesday evenings at Burgh House, Hampstead (5 minutes from Hampstead Tube station), always at 8 pm, for concerts by members of instrumental or vocal music, or both. Burgh House has a panelled music room holding up to 65 people, with a fine Blothner grand piano.

There are two social events for all members at Burgh House during the year.

A string quartet prepares for a master class

During the season, which runs from September to June, there are in addition two master classes at Burgh House for instrumentalists and one for singers. In the 2001-2002 season these will be led by Rebecca Miles (early and baroque music) and Lesley-Jane Rogers (Concert songs for soloists and ensembles).

In addition, there is music-making in private, in different members' homes: the motet and madrigal group, the recorder group, and unrehearsed chamber music playing - all relatively informal, but nevertheless carefully organised. There are also several Musical evenings hosted by one or other of the members during the season. There are two social events for all members at Burgh House during the year.

On joining, members receive a list showing who in the Club plays what instrument, who are the Organisers of the different sections, and which of the pianists is interested in accompanying singers or playing with other instruments.

All the above is flexible; we are always trying out new ways to enjoy music. For instance, in June 2001 we held our second Saturday Workshop for players and singers, reading sacred and secular music under the leadership of David Roblou, professor at the Guildhall School of Music. A similar workshop will be held in June 2002.
